Ranger Power started developing the Assembly Solar project in 2017. The total project capacity is 239 Megawatts (MW). The project was built in three phases (Assembly Solar I, Assembly Solar II, and Assembly Solar III), totalling 239 MW and started construction in late 2019 and the last phase became operational in 2021. 239 MW is approximately enough energy to power 35,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 394,000 tons - equivalent to over 77,000 cars off the road.
During the development process, Venice Township was involved in the planning phases and Venice Township and Ranger Power held several meetings to discuss the project. Venice Township's input through the process influenced the design and several additional requirements and protections for the township and its residents. Ranger Power agreed to these requirements as conditions of approval to the Special Use Permit issued by Shiawassee County. Ranger Power also met with several members of the community and attempted to meet with every neighbor to the project to discuss the project and answer questions.
The project was widely supported receiving 36 letters of support including from Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, Michigan Agri-Business Association, local businesses, and several local residents. The project is an over $250 million investment in Shiawassee County and has approximately doubled the taxable value and tax revenue to Venice Township and contributed over $6.5 million in new tax revenue to Shiawassee County. During construction the project employed over 500 craft workers, approximately 70% of which were local hires.
